The math is simple. A 2x6 stud cavity is 5.5 inches deep. R-19 batts are compressed to fit 6.25-inch cavities, so they're squeezed down and lose performance. R-21 batts are designed specifically for true 5.5-inch cavities.
That 2-point R-value difference matters more than you think. In a 2,000 SF home, upgrading from R-19 to R-21 can save you $80-120 annually on heating and cooling. Over 20 years, that's real money.
Plus Arkansas energy code (based on IRC R402.2) requires continuous insulation OR higher cavity R-values in Climate Zone 3A. R-21 helps you hit those targets without adding foam sheathing.
