Signs your attic needs more insulation โ and why November is the perfect time to check.
If your heating bill jumped last January and you never figured out why, walk up to your attic this weekend. Chances are, the answer is right above your head. Most Northeast Arkansas homes were built to code minimums from the 1990s โ and those minimums don't cut it anymore.
Here's what to look for. If you can see the tops of your ceiling joists, your insulation is already too thin. Current IRC code for Climate Zone 3 (that's us โ Jonesboro, Trumann, Paragould) calls for R-38 in the attic. The sweet spot most energy auditors recommend is R-49 to R-60. If you're sitting at R-19 or less, you're losing serious heat.
Other red flags: ice dams forming at your eaves last winter, rooms that never seem to warm up no matter how hard the furnace runs, and HVAC equipment that short-cycles constantly. Each of these points back to thermal bypasses โ places where heat escapes unchecked through your ceiling plane.
The fix isn't always expensive. Adding blown-in cellulose on top of existing batts typically runs $1.00โ$1.75 per square foot installed around here. A 1,200 SF attic could be brought up to R-49 for roughly $1,200โ$2,100 โ and most homeowners see a 15โ25% reduction in heating and cooling costs the first full year.
November is ideal timing. Crews are available, attics are cooling down, and you'll have the upgrade in place before the hard freezes hit in December and January.
