Signs your attic needs more insulation are easy to miss โ€” until your heating bill hits $300 in January. If your Northeast Arkansas home was built before 2000, there's a real chance your attic is running on R-11 or R-19 when Energy Star recommends R-49 to R-60 for Climate Zone 3.

Here's what to watch for right now, heading into a Jonesboro winter:

**Your second floor is always colder than the first.** Heat rises and escapes straight through an under-insulated attic deck. If you're cranking the thermostat to keep bedrooms comfortable, you're paying for heat that's already gone.

**Your energy bills spiked but nothing else changed.** A well-insulated attic can cut heating and cooling costs 15โ€“25%. If your bill jumped $60โ€“$90/month and your utility rates didn't, insulation loss or settling is a likely culprit โ€” especially with older blown-in fiberglass that compacts over time.

**You can see your attic joists.** Peek up there with a flashlight. If the wood framing is visible above the insulation, you're probably sitting at R-19 or less. You want that material flush with โ€” or above โ€” the tops of the joists to hit code minimum R-38, and ideally higher.

**Ice dams formed last winter.** We don't see them every year in Trumann or Jonesboro, but when temps dip hard in January, ice dams signal heat escaping through the roof deck and melting snow unevenly. More insulation plus air sealing stops that cycle.
