Signs your attic needs more insulation this summer

Is your air conditioner running almost constantly during a Northeast Arkansas July — and your upstairs rooms still feel like a sauna? Your attic insulation might be the culprit, not your HVAC unit.

Here are the clearest signs your attic is robbing you blind. First, touch your ceiling on a hot afternoon. If it feels warm to the hand, heat is conducting straight through — a classic symptom of insulation that's too thin or too compressed to do its job.

Second, pull down your attic hatch and look. Climate Zone 3 (that's us — Jonesboro, Trumann, and most of northeast Arkansas) requires a minimum of R-38 in the attic per IRC Table N1102.1.3. Most older homes around here have R-11 to R-19 of settled fiberglass batts — barely half of what code demands today.
