Is your upstairs 5โ10ยฐF hotter than the rest of the house every July? That's not just bad luck โ that's a failing thermal barrier, and your AC is paying the price.
The #1 sign your attic needs more insulation is uneven temperatures floor to floor. If the second bedroom feels like a pizza oven while the living room stays cool, heat is pouring straight through your ceiling. In Climate Zone 3 (that's us โ Jonesboro, Trumann, all of Northeast Arkansas), the IRC and EnergyStar both recommend attic insulation at R-38 to R-60. Most older homes around here are sitting at R-11 to R-19 โ less than half of what's needed.
Another dead giveaway: your energy bill spikes hard in June and never comes back down. A properly insulated attic (R-49 total is our usual target here) can cut cooling loads by 15โ25%. At current Entergy rates, that's real money โ often $80โ$150/month back in your pocket during peak summer.
Also check for visible clues up there. If you can see the tops of your ceiling joists poking above the insulation, you're short. Blown-in fiberglass or cellulose should bury those joists completely โ you want at least 13โ15 inches of settled depth for R-49. Matted, discolored, or wet insulation means it's already lost most of its R-value and needs to come out.
Finally, if your home was built before 1990 and has never had an insulation upgrade, the odds are high you're under-insulated. It's one of the fastest-payback upgrades a Northeast Arkansas homeowner can make.
