Signs your attic needs more insulation this summer

If your energy bill jumped $40–$80 compared to last June and your upstairs rooms never quite cool down, your attic insulation is probably the culprit. Northeast Arkansas summers are brutal — we're talking 95°F days with heat indexes pushing 108°F — and a under-insulated attic can hit 150°F by mid-afternoon. That heat radiates straight down into your living space no matter how hard your AC runs.

So what are the warning signs? First, touch your ceiling on a hot afternoon. If it feels warm to the hand, radiant heat is winning. Second, check your attic hatch — if there's no insulation on the back of that door, you have a significant air-sealing gap. Third, pull back any existing insulation and look at the joists. If you can see the tops of the joists, you're sitting at roughly R-11 or less. Climate Zone 3 (that's us — Craighead County, Poinsett County) calls for R-38 minimum per IRC R402.1.2.

Blown-in fiberglass or cellulose to bring a 1,200 SF attic from R-11 up to R-38 typically runs $1.20–$1.80 per square foot installed — call it $1,400–$2,200 for most ranch-style homes in the Jonesboro and Trumann area. Spray foam air-sealing the top plates and rim penetrations first, then blowing over it, is the gold-standard combo. Most homeowners see a 15–20% reduction in summer cooling costs within the first full billing cycle.
