Is your attic secretly costing you $200 a month this summer? If your energy bills keep climbing despite a perfectly functioning AC unit, your attic insulation is the first place to look. "Signs your attic needs more insulation" is one of the most googled questions from Jonesboro homeowners every July โ and for good reason.
First, check your attic floor with a tape measure. Northeast Arkansas sits in Climate Zone 3, where the IRC and ENERGY STAR both recommend a minimum of R-38 to R-60 in the attic. If your existing blown-in or batt insulation measures less than 10โ11 inches of fiberglass (roughly R-38), you're under-insulated and paying for it daily.
Second, walk through your second floor around 3 PM on a 95ยฐF day like we've been having this week. Rooms that feel stuffy or uneven compared to the first floor are a classic symptom. Hot air radiates straight through a thin attic floor and dumps heat into your living space faster than your HVAC can remove it.
Third, look for these quick visual clues: visible attic floor joists (insulation should bury them), thin or compressed batts, and any gaps around recessed lights or the attic hatch. Air leaks at those spots cancel out whatever R-value you do have.
Finally, pull a recent electric bill. If you're running more than 2 kWh per square foot of home per month during peak summer, poor attic insulation is almost certainly part of the problem.
