The most obvious sign is uneven room temperatures. If the bedrooms upstairs feel like a sauna at 4 p.m. while the living room stays tolerable, you're losing the battle at the ceiling plane. That temperature swing usually means your attic floor is sitting at R-19 or less when Climate Zone 3 code (IRC R402.1.2) calls for R-38 minimum โ and R-49 is the sweet spot we recommend for Jonesboro and Trumann homes.
Another red flag: ice dams in winter. Yes, even here. When warm air escapes your living space into a cold attic, it melts snow at the roof deck and refreezes at the eaves. If you saw any icicle buildup last January, your attic was leaking heat โ and money.
Pull down your attic hatch and eyeball the insulation depth. Blown-in fiberglass or cellulose should be 10โ13 inches deep for R-38. If you can see the top of your ceiling joists (3.5 inches), you're severely under-insulated. A typical 1,200 SF attic top-up with blown cellulose runs $0.75โ$1.10 per square foot installed โ one of the fastest paybacks in the building envelope.
