Signs your attic needs more insulation โ and why November is the worst time to ignore them.
If your energy bill jumped 20โ30% last winter and you can't explain it, walk up into your attic before you call the utility company. Chances are, the answer is right above your head. Northeast Arkansas sits in Climate Zone 3, where the IRC (R402.1.2) calls for a minimum R-38 in attics โ but we routinely find homes in Jonesboro and Trumann with R-11 or less, barely a third of what's required.
Here's what to look for. First, can you see the tops of your floor joists? If the insulation sits level with or below the joists, you're probably under R-15. Proper R-38 depth in blown fiberglass is roughly 13โ14 inches; blown cellulose gets you there in about 11 inches. Second, do certain rooms feel impossible to heat evenly? Hot and cold spots room-to-room are a textbook symptom of thermal bypass โ warm air escaping straight through a thin or missing insulation layer.
Two more quick checks: look for daylight around recessed lights, attic hatches, or plumbing chases โ those gaps can leak as much heat as a window left cracked open all winter. Also touch your ceiling on a cold morning. If it feels noticeably cool, you're paying to heat your attic instead of your living space.
Adding blown cellulose to bring a 1,500 SF attic from R-11 up to R-38 typically runs $1.20โ$1.80 per square foot installed in this market โ and most homeowners see payback inside three to four heating seasons. With temps dropping fast across Craighead and Poinsett counties, now is the time to act, not January.
