What are the signs your attic needs more insulation? If you're asking that question in late October, you're asking it at exactly the right time โ€” because once those Arkansas cold snaps hit Jonesboro and Trumann, the damage to your energy bill is already done.

The most obvious sign is uneven temperatures room to room. If your upstairs bedrooms feel like a different climate than your living room, heat is escaping straight through an under-insulated ceiling. In Climate Zone 3 (Northeast Arkansas), the IRC recommends attic insulation at R-38 minimum โ€” most older homes we inspect are sitting at R-11 or R-13, barely a third of what's needed.

Check your energy bills next. A poorly insulated 1,800 SF attic can account for 25โ€“30% of your total heating and cooling loss. Homeowners switching from R-13 to R-38 blown-in cellulose or fiberglass in this region routinely see $80โ€“$140 off their monthly utility bills during peak season. That pays back the install cost in two to three winters.

Look up in the attic yourself if you can do it safely. If you can see the tops of the floor joists, you don't have enough insulation โ€” period. A properly insulated attic should have material buried well above those joists, typically 10โ€“14 inches of blown-in product to hit R-38.

Finally, watch for ice dams this winter. Northeast Arkansas doesn't get heavy snow every year, but when we do, ice damming at the eave line is a textbook symptom of heat loss through the attic deck.
