Signs your attic needs more insulation โ€” and why October is the last smart window to fix it.

If your Jonesboro home heats unevenly, your upstairs feels stuffy before the rest of the house warms up, or your gas bill jumped 25โ€“35% last January, your attic is probably the culprit. Most older homes in Northeast Arkansas are sitting on R-11 to R-19 of compressed, settled insulation. Climate Zone 3 code (IRC R402.1.2) calls for R-38 minimum in attics โ€” meaning a lot of local ceilings are half-dressed heading into winter.

Here's what to look for. Pull down your attic hatch and shine a flashlight across the joists. If you can see the top of the joists clearly, you're under-insulated โ€” full stop. At R-38 you should have roughly 12 inches of blown cellulose or about 10 inches of open-cell spray foam covering those framing members completely.

Check your attic hatch itself. An uninsulated or un-weatherstripped hatch is basically a hole in your thermal envelope โ€” cold air funnels straight down into your living space every time your HVAC kicks on. Same goes for recessed lights without airtight covers and open top plates around interior walls.

Outside clues matter too. After the first frost, walk around and look at your roof. If your shingles are frost-free in patches while the neighbors' roofs are still white, heat is escaping through those spots โ€” you're literally watching money evaporate.

Blown-in cellulose to bring an average Jonesboro attic (1,200 SF) up to R-38 typically runs $1.20โ€“$1.60 per square foot installed. Most homeowners recover that in 2โ€“3 heating seasons. We're booking mid-November slots now โ€” once the cold really locks in, our schedule fills fast.
