If your upstairs rooms feel 5–8°F hotter than your thermostat setting on a July afternoon, your attic is probably the culprit — not your HVAC. Northeast Arkansas summers routinely push attic temps past 150°F, and thin or settled insulation just can't hold the line.
Here are the clearest signs you need more insulation up there. First, touch your ceiling after noon — if it feels warm, heat is conducting straight through. Second, check your electric bill: a poorly insulated 1,500 SF home in climate zone 3 (that's us) can bleed $80–$120 extra per month May through September. Third, peek into the attic yourself — if you can see the tops of your ceiling joists poking above the insulation, you're almost certainly below the IRC R402.1.2 minimum of R-38 for Zone 3, and well short of the recommended R-49 to R-60.
Settled blown-in fiberglass loses effective R-value over time. If your home was built before 2005, there's a real chance what's up there rates closer to R-19 or R-22 than whatever the original install promised. Adding blown-in cellulose to bring a 1,200 SF attic from R-19 to R-49 typically runs $1.00–$1.50 per square foot installed — one of the fastest paybacks in residential energy work.
