Is your upstairs bedroom 5โ8 degrees hotter than the rest of the house? That's not normal โ and it's almost always an attic insulation problem. In Northeast Arkansas, August heat index values routinely hit 105ยฐF, and an under-insulated attic can reach 160ยฐF. That heat radiates straight down into your living space.
Here are the clearest signs your attic needs attention. First, your energy bill is spiking. If your July or August electric bill jumped more than 15โ20% year-over-year and your habits haven't changed, thin or degraded insulation is a prime suspect. Second, you can feel heat radiating from your ceiling in the afternoon โ press your hand flat against the drywall around 3 p.m. and it should feel cool, not warm.
Third, check your existing insulation depth. In Climate Zone 3 (that's us โ Jonesboro, Trumann, Paragould), the IRC R402.1.2 table calls for R-38 minimum in attics. That's roughly 12 inches of blown fiberglass or about 11 inches of cellulose. If you're staring at 4โ6 inches of old, matted fiberglass batts, you're running at maybe R-13 to R-19 โ half of what code requires.
Fourth, look for air-sealing gaps around recessed lights, top plates, and attic hatches. Even perfect insulation R-value is wasted if conditioned air is leaking straight up into the attic. We always air-seal before we add material.
