Is your upstairs bedroom ten degrees hotter than the rest of the house? That's one of the clearest signs your attic needs more insulation โ and in Northeast Arkansas, late July is when a weak attic will absolutely punish you.
Here's what to look for before you call us. First, check your energy bill. If your July or August electric bill is running $250โ$350+ for a standard 1,800 sq ft home, your attic is likely bleeding conditioned air. A properly insulated attic in Climate Zone 3 (that's us โ Jonesboro, Trumann, Paragould) should carry at least R-38, and R-49 is the IRC R402.1.2 code target for new construction here.
Second, get a flashlight and peek into the attic hatch. If you can see the tops of your ceiling joists, your blown-in or batt insulation has settled below R-19. That's roughly 6 inches of fiberglass โ less than half of what you need. We see this constantly in homes built before 2000.
Third, touch your ceiling on a hot afternoon. A ceiling that feels warm to the touch means radiant heat is winning. Adding blown-in cellulose or open-cell spray foam to bring you to R-49 can cut attic heat transfer by 40โ50% and realistically trim $60โ$120 off a summer electric bill.
Fourth, watch your AC run cycles. If your unit is running almost continuously after 2 p.m., the attic load is overwhelming it โ that's wear and cost you don't need.
