Here's what to look for: Upstairs rooms that stay 5+ degrees warmer than downstairs, even with the AC running. Ice dams on your roof edges last winter (yes, we get them in Jonesboro too). Uneven temperatures between rooms on the same floor.
Walk into your attic on a 90-degree day. If it feels like an oven up there, you're losing conditioned air fast. Current Arkansas energy code requires R-38 minimum in attics, but many homes built before 2010 have R-19 or less.
Another dead giveaway: your energy bills jumped 20%+ compared to last summer, but your usage habits didn't change. That's your HVAC system working overtime to replace air you're losing through inadequate insulation.
Check your existing insulation depth with a ruler. Blown cellulose should be 12-15 inches deep for R-38. Fiberglass batts should completely fill joist cavities with no gaps or compression.
Spray foam gives you the highest R-value per inch (R-6.5 for closed cell) and stops air leaks completely. It's an investment that typically pays for itself in 3-4 years through energy savings.
