June in Northeast Arkansas means 90°+ days are here, and if your upstairs feels like an oven while your AC runs nonstop, you're likely looking at classic signs your attic needs more insulation.

The biggest red flag? Temperature differences between floors. If your second story runs 5-8 degrees hotter than downstairs, your attic isn't doing its job. Other telltale signs include ice dams last winter, unusually high electric bills during peak summer months, and feeling drafts near ceiling fixtures or attic access points.

Most homes in our area need R-38 to R-49 in attics (per IRC climate zone 3A), but many older homes have just R-19 or less. That's like wearing a t-shirt in a blizzard. Insufficient insulation lets conditioned air escape through the ceiling while outdoor heat radiates down through your roof.

Before you crank the thermostat lower and watch your electric bill soar, grab a flashlight and check your attic. If you can see floor joists through the insulation, or if existing insulation looks compressed, thin, or damaged by rodents, it's time for an upgrade.

Spray foam, blown cellulose, or additional batts can typically bring older attics up to code. The investment usually pays for itself within 2-3 years through lower cooling costs, plus you'll finally have comfortable upstairs bedrooms this summer.
