What are the signs your attic needs more insulation? If you're asking that question in July in Northeast Arkansas, your house is probably already telling you — loudly.
The most obvious sign: rooms on the top floor feel 5–10°F hotter than the rest of the house even with the AC cranked. That heat is radiating straight through a thin or settled insulation layer. A properly insulated attic floor in Climate Zone 3 (that's us — Jonesboro, Trumann, Paragould) should hit R-38 to R-60 per IRC R402.1.2. Most older homes we inspect are sitting at R-11 to R-19. That gap is your electric bill.
Second red flag: you can see the tops of your ceiling joists when you peek into the attic. Current insulation should bury those joists completely — roughly 10–15 inches of blown-in fiberglass or cellulose. If you can see wood, you're under-insulated, plain and simple.
Third clue is your Duke Energy or NAEC bill. A 1,800 SF home in this region with inadequate attic insulation typically runs $180–$240/month in peak summer. Add R-20 worth of blown-in cellulose (roughly $0.85–$1.10/SF installed) and most homeowners report a 20��30% cooling cost reduction within the first billing cycle.
Bonus sign: ice dams in winter or visible daylight around attic hatches and duct penetrations. Those gaps let conditioned air escape year-round, not just in July.
