Signs your attic needs more insulation — and why August is the best time to find out.

If your upstairs rooms feel like a sauna no matter how hard your AC runs, your attic is probably the culprit. Northeast Arkansas summers are brutal, and an under-insulated attic can push indoor temps up by 10–15°F, forcing your system to work overtime. That shows up fast on your Entergy bill.

Here's what to look for. First, check your existing insulation depth. In Climate Zone 3 (that's us — Jonesboro, Trumann, Paragould), the IRC R402.1.2 table calls for a minimum R-38 in attics — that's roughly 12 inches of blown-in fiberglass or about 11 inches of cellulose. If you can see your ceiling joists poking above the insulation, you're already short.

Second, look at your energy bills from June and July. If you're running 20–30% higher than neighbors in a similar-sized house, thermal loss through the attic ceiling is a likely suspect. A properly air-sealed and insulated attic can cut cooling and heating loads by 15–25%, according to ENERGY STAR data.

Third, feel around your pull-down attic stairs and any recessed light fixtures below the attic floor. These are notorious bypass points — warm air pours through them like an open window, and no amount of fluffy insulation on top fixes a big air leak underneath.

The good news: August is prime scheduling time. Crews aren't yet slammed with the fall rush, and you'll have the upgrade done before October nights remind you how cold Zone 3 winters actually get.
