Is your attic quietly costing you hundreds of dollars a year? Before Northeast Arkansas flips from brutal August heat into those cool October nights, it's worth climbing up there โ or at least knowing the signs your attic needs more insulation.
First, check your energy bill. If your August cooling costs crept above last year's by 15% or more and your HVAC unit hasn't changed, thin or settled insulation is often the culprit. Fiberglass batts compress over time and lose R-value; blown-in cellulose can settle 20โ25% in the first few years.
Next, look at the attic floor itself. In Climate Zone 3 โ where Jonesboro and Trumann sit โ the IRC and Energy Star both recommend R-38 to R-60 for attic floors. If you can see the tops of your ceiling joists poking through, you're likely at R-19 or less. That's leaving real money on the table every single month.
Another telling sign: uneven room temperatures. If the second floor or rooms nearest the roofline stay stubbornly hot or cold no matter what the thermostat says, heat is moving through an under-insulated attic deck unchecked.
Finally, walk the perimeter of your attic hatch. Bypasses around light fixtures, plumbing chases, and the hatch itself can dump conditioned air straight into an attic. Air sealing those gaps before adding insulation is the step most DIYers skip โ and it matters just as much as the R-value itself.
