Think your attic insulation is "probably fine"? Here are the real signs it isn't โ and why late August is the perfect time to find out.
First, check your energy bills. If your Jonesboro home's electric bill ran above $250โ$300 a month this July and August, a under-insulated attic is a likely culprit. Heat pours through a ceiling with less than R-38 like it's barely there โ and Climate Zone 3 (Northeast Arkansas) code calls for R-38 to R-60 in attics for a reason.
Second, walk your attic if you can do it safely. Finally, look for ice dams โ or remember if you saw them last February. Ice dams mean heat is escaping your living space through the roof deck. That's an insulation and air-sealing problem, full stop.
Adding blown-in cellulose or open-cell spray foam to bring an attic up to R-49 typically runs $1.50โ$2.50 per square foot installed around here. Most homeowners recover that in 3โ5 heating and cooling seasons.
