What is rim joist insulation, and why does every energy auditor keep talking about it? The rim joist โ that band of framing sitting right on top of your foundation wall โ is one of the most air-leaky spots in any Northeast Arkansas home. In older Jonesboro and Trumann houses, it's often completely uninsulated, wide open to October air that's already dropping into the 50s at night.
Here's the problem in plain numbers. A typical single-story home has 100โ200 linear feet of rim joist. Left uninsulated, that perimeter can account for 15โ25% of your total air infiltration. That's not a rounding error โ that's real money leaking out every month.
Closed-cell spray foam is the gold-standard fix. A 2-inch lift of closed-cell gives you R-13, seals the air gap completely, and adds a small amount of structural rigidity to the band joist. At roughly $1.50โ$2.50 per board foot installed, a typical rim joist job runs $400โ$900 for most crawl-space homes โ and it usually pays back in 2โ4 heating seasons.
IRC Section R402.1.2 requires continuous air barriers in new construction, but retrofitting your existing rim joist gets you the same benefit without a full remodel. It's also one of the fastest spray foam jobs we do โ most are done in under two hours once the crew is set up.
With lows already dipping here in NEA and heating costs climbing, late September is the perfect window to knock this out before your furnace is running full-time. Don't leave that foundation perimeter naked another winter.
