Rim joist insulation: the sneaky heat loss most homes ignore

Ever wonder why your floors feel cold in January even after you've insulated the attic? The culprit is probably your rim joist — the band of framing that sits right on top of your foundation wall. It's one of the most overlooked air-leakage points in any house, and Northeast Arkansas winters will find it fast.

A standard 2×10 rim joist has an R-value of maybe R-9 on a good day. That framing is also riddled with gaps where cold outside air pours straight into your floor system. In climate zone 3 (where Jonesboro and Trumann sit), IRC R402.1.2 calls for a minimum R-13 in that cavity — and sealing the air gap matters just as much as the insulation value itself.

The fix we use most often is 2 inches of closed-cell spray foam applied directly to the rim joist band. Two inches gets you to roughly R-13, seals every gap in one shot, and resists moisture — which is critical down here where humid summers and wet crawl spaces go hand in hand. Material cost runs about $1.50–$2.25 per board foot installed, and a typical 1,500 SF ranch house might have 150–180 linear feet of rim joist to cover.
