Rim joist insulation: the sneaky energy leak most homes ignore

Rim joist insulation is one of the most Googled — and most overlooked — fixes in a Northeast Arkansas home. That narrow band of framing sitting right on top of your foundation wall leaks conditioned air 365 days a year, but it really shows its teeth when Jonesboro hits 97 °F in late July and your AC runs nonstop.

Here's what's actually happening: most older homes have zero insulation in the rim joist cavity, or a scrap of deteriorating fiberglass batt that's fallen out of place. Either way, hot humid air is infiltrating right at floor level, and your HVAC system is paying the price.

Closed-cell spray foam is the go-to fix here. A 2-inch lift hits roughly R-13, and 3 inches gets you to R-19 — which satisfies IRC R402.1.2 for Climate Zone 3 (that's us). The foam also acts as an air AND vapor barrier in one shot, which batts simply cannot do in a humid Delta climate.

Cost-wise, expect $1.50–$2.50 per board foot installed for closed-cell. A typical 1,500 SF ranch home has somewhere around 150–200 linear feet of rim joist, so total cost usually lands between $400 and $900 depending on access and depth. That's a small number for a fix that can shave 5–10% off your cooling bill.
