Have you ever stood near your baseboards in January and felt a cold draft โ even with the heat cranked up? Nine times out of ten, the culprit is an uninsulated rim joist. This is one of the most overlooked spots in any Northeast Arkansas home, and fixing it is easier than you think.
The rim joist (sometimes called a band joist) is that strip of framing lumber that sits on top of your foundation wall and closes off the floor system. In most older homes in the Jonesboro and Trumann area, it's either completely bare or stuffed with old fiberglass batts that have sagged, shifted, or gotten wet over the years. Either way, you're losing conditioned air constantly.
The gold standard fix is two-component closed-cell spray foam applied at 2 inches thick. That gets you to roughly R-13 โ enough to meet IRC R402.2 requirements for Climate Zone 3, which covers most of Arkansas. Closed-cell foam also acts as an air barrier AND a vapor retarder in one shot, which matters a lot in our humid summers. At around $2.50โ$4.00 per board foot installed, a typical crawl space rim joist job runs $400โ$900 depending on linear footage โ a small price for what clients tell us can be a noticeable drop on their next Entergy bill.
