Your heating bill spiked in October and you've already checked the attic. But here's what most homeowners miss: the rim joist. That narrow band of framing sitting right on top of your foundation wall is one of the biggest air-leak points in the whole house โ and in Northeast Arkansas, it starts costing real money the moment a cold front rolls down from Missouri.
A rim joist is typically 1.5 inches of wood facing the outdoors with nothing behind it. Zero insulation, zero air barrier. On a 1,500 SF ranch-style home, you might have 150โ200 linear feet of exposed rim joist โ that's a lot of surface area working against your furnace all winter.
The fix is straightforward. We cut 2-inch closed-cell spray foam panels or spray 2" of closed-cell directly into each bay. Two inches of closed-cell hits R-13 and โ more importantly โ creates a continuous air seal that batting simply can't match. IRC R402.1.2 recognizes air sealing here as a meaningful performance upgrade, and most local energy auditors flag it in every report they write.
Cost? Expect roughly $1.50โ$2.50 per board foot installed, depending on access and bay count. A typical Jonesboro crawl-access home runs $300โ$600 for the whole rim joist โ and homeowners regularly report 10โ15% drops in their monthly gas bills after the work is done. That payback window is usually under two heating seasons.
November is the perfect time to get this done before the real cold locks in. We can usually knock out a rim joist job in a single morning with zero disruption to your day.
